A Message from the Pastor

Fr. KenWelcome to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and School in Herrin, Illinois.  Herrin is a community established in 1900 and was populated with diversity from the beginning.  Predominantly Italian, but Hungarian, German, Polish, Irish, Lithuanians, and people from all over eastern Europe came to work in the mines.

The Church soon became the focal point for all these Catholic immigrants.  It was their faith that connected them to their roots in Europe and now continue to bring them to Jesus Christ and form new relationships in this new country.  The gifts and talents of all these people built the parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.  Today, the parish celebrates that diversity with people from every continent.  Together we live our lives, learn about the world in which we live and grow as God's people in a world that is both wonderful and filled with conflicting values all at the same time.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is a busy place.  It invites people with children to be part of our school, now celebrating 106 years of faith and learning.  There are ministries and opportunities for involvement for everyone, and a place to share talents in our choir, in Liturgical roles as cantors, lectors and Eucharistic ministers.  There are also opportunities to join organizations like the Knights of Columbus, Daughters of Mary, Daughters of Isabella, School Committee, and Parent-Teacher organizations.

If you come with us, if you journey with us, you will be blessed to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit when we worship together and when we work together to proclaim the Kingdom of God on earth. We are a people who believe that Jesus Christ has come to save us and He wants us to evangelize our world--the place where we live.
