Meet the Pastor

Fr. K 2

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Regional Catholic School is a parochial school within the Diocese of Belleville, Illinois.  Our Pastor and Administrator is Monsignor Kenneth Schaefer.  He is also the Pastor and spiritual leader for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.  Monsignor Schaefer, (also known as 'Father Ken'), grew up in a little town named Millstadt, just south of Belleville, Illinois. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese on June 8, 1974.  He received his Master's Degree in Theology at Josephinum Pontifical Seminary in Columbus Ohio.

His first assignment was Associate Pastor at St. Henry's Parish in Belleville and as a part-time teacher at Althoff Catholic High School.  In 1979, he was named co-pastor with Fr. Marvin Volk, to St. Mary's Parish in Mt. Carmel, IL and St. Francis Xavier Parish in St. Francisville, IL.  In 1989, he was named Vocation Director fo the Diocese and pastor of St. Michael's Church in Paderborn, IL.

In 1994, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Mt. CarmeL Church in Herrin, IL.  Then, in 1999, Father Ken was named a Monsignor.  During his pastorate, the school has been expanded to include the purchase and renovation of what is now known as Cabrini Hall.  Inside Cabrini, there are seven classrooms, a large multi-purpose room, an office space, and a large youth room known as the « Room of 12 + 1 » (the Apostles and St. Paul), which is used by the high school youth of the parish.  In 2005, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church was renovated to include restrooms and a large gathering space. The renovation turned the original church into a beautiful place of prayer and worship.   At the present time, a new school west of the church is being built.  Long range plans will include a new cafeteria and gymnasium.
